Guidelines for Keeping a Lab Notebook

A lab notebook is the primary permanent record of your research and experiments. Note that if you are taking an AP Placement lab course, you need to present a suitable lab notebook in order to get AP credit at most colleges and universities. Here is a list of guidelines that explains how to keep a lab notebook. Notebook Must Be Permanently Bound It should not be loose-leaf or in a 3-ring binder. Never tear a page out of the lab notebook. If you make a mistake, you can cross it out, but you should not remove sheets or parts of sheets from your book. When you cross out an error, it should still be legible. You should be  explaining the reason for the strikethrough and you should initial and date it. To that point, it is not acceptable to take notes in pencil or erasable ink. Keep Everything Legible and Organized Organization is key to a good lab book. Print your name, contact info, the date and other pertinent information on the cover of the lab book.  Some lab books require you to enter some of this information on every page of the book. If your book is not pre-numbered, number every page. Usually, numbers are located in the upper outer corner and both the front and back of each page is numbered. Your labor instructor may have a rule regarding numbering. If so, follow their instructions. Its also a good idea to reserve the first couple of pages for a Table of Contents. To keep everything organized and simplified, start a fresh page for each experiment. Be Precise in Your Record Keeping This is a record of the lab work you have done during the semester or year, so it needs to be thorough. For each experiment, record the date(s) and list lab partners, if applicable. Record all information real-time. Dont wait to fill in the information. It may be tempting to record data elsewhere and then transcribe it into your lab notebook, usually because it would make the notebook neater, but its important to record it immediately. Include charts, photos, graphs and similar information in your lab notebook. Usually, youll tape these in or include a pocket for a data chip. If you must keep some data in a separate book or other location, note the location in your lab book and cross-reference it with the relevant lab book page numbers wherever the data is stored. Dont leave gaps or white space in the lab book. If you have a big open space, cross it out. The purpose of this is so no one can go back in and add false details at a later date.

The Vital Stage of Every Student Erik Erikson´s Stages...

Children begin elementary school around the age of five years old. Erik Erikson has developed a theory broken down into several different stages representing different stages of a persons life, and one of his stages is directly associated with the age of children who enter the school scene for the first time. This stage is commonly referred to as Industry Vs. Inferiority. Research has proven that this stage in children’s lives is a critical stage that will determine how they look at themselves and others for many years to come. Erikson’s fourth stage of personality development, Industry Vs. Inferiority, can be defined as the stage in which a child determines their self worth and skills. This level of Erikson’s theory is molded around this concept. Students have the ability to succeed, but depending on their encounters in school, their potential may never be revealed. Another example of how a classroom can strengthen or inhibit a students self worth is through their interests. This also applies to student’s relationships with their peers, but as Jones, Burks, and Jones (1936) state, there is value in students who share the same interests. They observed that students who enjoyed the same things seems to communicate more frequently to each other, and this increased there self worth (Jones et al., 1936). Finally, research from Jones, Burks, and Jones (1936) observed that students who had similar personalities spent more time together during recess and other free times during the school day. Based on their observations, the students wanted to spend time together because they felt wanted and enjoyed each other’s company (Jones et al., 1936). This relates back to the students self worth and their potential to be successful students in the future. Erikson identifies this stage of development into two extreme levels. In this piece of coursework, I am going to write about Genetic engineering. I am going to discuss about the statement â€Å"Only God has the right to interfere with our genes†. I am going to Genes are made up of DNA. Genes determine the inherited characteristics that distinguish one individual from another. Each human has an estimated 90,000 genes. I think interfering with someone genes is totally wrong because its like deciding who will be what, like if doctors select someone as 99.99% footballer, then there will be no way he can beated by others. Some Muslims believe that Doctors are playing God because they are deciding our genes. They are deciding our colour, style, attitude etc. I think this is totally wrong because God made us and only he has the right to make changes in us. Allah Almighty says: (See ye not how Allah hath made serviceable unto you whatsoever is in the skies and whatsoever is in the earth and hath loaded you with His favors both without and within? Yet of mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah, without knowledge or guidance or a Scripture giving light.) (Luqman 31: 20) which means doctors shouldn’t interfere with God decisions. Whereas Some Muslims would say it’s ok to interfere with genes to help someone because the Quran and hadith teach that Muslims should do all they can to cure disease? Discovering the genetic make-up of humans and using those discoveries to Improve human life is a part of what God wants humans to do as vice-gerents of his creation. It is no difference from researching into drugs which can be used to improve human life. There is a different between creating cells and creating people. Creating people by science rather than sex would be wrong. Because it would be taking over God’s role in the creation of life, but creating cells is working with God. Some Christians mainly liberal Protestants, believe that genetic engineering is a good thing which should be supported by churches because Jesus told people to cure the disease and they believe that Jesus was also a healer whereas Some Christian will disagree with their view because they believe that they believe that jesus was also a healer whereas, Some Christians will disagree with their view because they believe that there is a different between creating cells and creating people. Creating people by rather than sex would be wrong because it would be wrong because it would be taking over God’s role in the creation of life, but creating cells is working with God. Roman Catholics disagree with the use of embryos because they think life begins at the moment of conception whether in a womb or a glass dish. The years that he had of an unpredictable life that was thrown at him and the knowledge he learned himself came out only in words of wisdom whenever you had a problem. With a soft spoken voice and carefully chosen words he would be sure to set anything straight no matter what crooked path you were staggering on. Being my mothers father you always s howed respect to him, and being disrespectful wasnt tolerated. Grandfather always had a lot of love and admiration for every member of the family. You always knew you were welcome by the sparkle in his eye and the wide grin on his face every time you entered his home.My grandfather always had a soft heart for animals whether they were his own or not. I remember going to his house one day and he was nursing a stray kitten. He had found it nearly frozen and almost starved to death. Anyone else would probably have made away with it, but not him. Grandfather had the poor thing for about two weeks until he got it back on its feet. Finally, with health and strength regained, he set it free again. My grandfather would never pen in an animal. He said it was cruel, and cruelty he had no time for. When we were younger, and being the instigators that we were, we sometimes made our grandfathers patience grow thin, but he surely let you know when they got there. With a frowned expression on his face or his hand on your backside, he sent you home while saying, Now get home to your mother.Kindness is something that my grandfather had no matter what time of day, month, or year. His home was always a place to go and his door was never locked. Everyone was welcome. My grandfather was a hard working man. He started young with a relatively large family to support, hard work never slowed him down. Being a very skilled sawmill operator, he did exceptionally fine work and everyone knew where the work was coming from. For my grandfather, precision was everything and there was no in between. This would prove worthy years later when he started carpentry in a little: shed just a few yards from his house. The pride that went into his work really showed in the finished product. Money he had respected for and the value of a dollar he looked after. He always said, a penny saved is a penny earned, or waste not, want not. Grandfather really enjoyed the outdoor life. He and grandmother would s pend days up in their cabin along side the river. Setting a few rabbit snares to have something for the pot the following day was something to look forward to. Both of them really enjoyed their quiet time alone. Being out in nature was just the place to have it. To my grandfather, family was everything and a stranger was always a good friend. He would have this way about him that a problem could be overcome and family was to come together in any situation. Family did come together on one particular occasion. My grandfather passed away after a short illness. You could really see what was learned from my grandfathers words, the pulling of the family together. My grandfather is truly missed by everyone still. He was a teacher of good moral values, a loyal father of thirteen children, thirty-eight grand- children, a faithful husband, honest and hard working, and truly respected by everyone.There once was a man I knew, and I called him grandfather
